I don’t think I can sit here and tell you that the IFC sketch comedy series “Portlandia” is the funniest thing I’ve ever seen. It’s not. The jokes, which lampoon the city of Portland, Oregon and hipster culture in general, often fall short. However, when the show is on it‘s firing on all cylinders.
Portlandia’s biggest strength lies in its cameos. “Saturday Night Live” alum Fred Armisen and former Sleater-Kinney guitarist Carrie Brownstein have no doubt used their status in their respected scenes to land some great talent including Steve Buscemi, Aubrey Plaza and folk singer-songwriter Aimee Mann who guest stars as Fred and Carrie’s cleaning lady.
The following clip is hands down all-time favorite if for no other reason than the “indie rock geek-out” I had when I first saw it. Seriously, peep the lineup: you’ve got The Shins/Broken Bells frontman James Mercer, The Decemberists‘ Colin Meloy and Carrie’s former Sleater-Kinney bandmate Corin Tucker all on one screen!
