New Music: “Christopher Lee: A Heavy Metal Christmas”

Happy Holidays from Hobsnobbery! I was originally going to share a playlist of some of my favorite Christmas songs. Though I still might do that at a later date, I found myself getting bored of what I was listening to. To me, the problem with (most) Christmas music is it’s all so predictable. Don’t get me wrong, I hold no hatred for the standards, but how many years can you hear Bing Crosby or Nat King Cole before you fall asleep under the Christmas tree? The people crave something new, something different! Who better to bring us holiday music than one of the most seasoned badasses alive: Christopher Lee.

At 90 years old, the veteran actor and star of hit franchises like The Lord of the Rings trilogy and the Star Wars prequels has recorded a single featuring–get this–metal covers of “Little Drummer Boy” and “Silent Night.” It’s so ridiculous it works. For a guy who’s portrayed the king of vampires and spent the last decade kicking both Jedi and Hobbit asses this is too awesome for words.

Saruman Vs. Santa: the ultimate battle!
“There was a time when Saruman used to walk these woods. Now he has a mind of metal…and Christmas songs.”

“Little Drummer Boy” is pretty sick. It’s a bit overwrought musically, but it gives the listener a great visual of the titular hero wielding a broadsword rather than a pair of drumsticks, slaying dragons on his way to play for the baby Jesus. I wish I could say the same for “Silent Night.” I get the impression that the studio had their session musicians record some instrumentals and had Lee lay down some vocals several days later, not really knowing or caring if they were properly synced.

Here’s a preview of both songs. You can buy the single on either iTunes or Amazon.
