One the best parts of the VGM scene is the being able to hear some of my favorite game themes played with full arrangements. To me no genre embodies that more than Role-Playing Games. With that in mind my next few entries of “Player 1 Press Start” will feature some of my favorite RPG covers.
Prior to their controversial merger in 2003, Enix and Squaresoft had the market cornered during the 90s with their brand of innovative gameplay, larger-than-life set pieces and epic themes. The World is Square is a 5-piece band from Boston, Massachusetts, specializing in some rather slick Folk-themed covers from that classic era of gaming. Their 2012 album No Phoenix Down Can Save You Now is chock full of great music from Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy VII and the granddaddy of all RPGs, Final Fantasy VI.
You can listen to their cover of “The Veldt” (often known as “Wild West”) from FFVI below. They’ll be playing a handful of dates over the next few months including an appearance at PAX East, the East Coast chapter of the gaming festival founded by the creators of the popular gaming comic Penny Arcade.
