Videos: The Joy Formidable – “Wolf’s Law”

Well this is a pleasant surprise!

Despite spending most of 2012 on the road on a world tour, Welsh trio The Joy Formidable have been relatively quiet as of late. There were several subtle hints that the band was hard at work on their follow-up to 2011’s breakthrough effort “The Big Roar,” but no new music has surfaced—until now. I was confused at first when they used the hashtag #wolfslaw in a recent post on Twitter. I was a little confused about what it could mean, but now I know as does the rest of the world.

Earlier this week The Joy Formidable unveiled “Wolf’s Law,” the first new track to be released presumably from the upcoming album of the same name. However, there’s no word yet on whether or not this will appear on said release. In talking with Stereoboard vocalist/guitarist Ritzy Byan had this to say about the video:

“[The film] captures the unforgiving momentum of life, the restlessness of nature’s cycles and the parallels as well as the uniqueness of each creature’s journey. Contrasting images of the forces of nature at its most violent and destructive with nature as creator, the film poses essential questions which have been at the forefront of our minds throughout the recording process of ‘Wolf’s Law’.

Recording in Wales, London, upstate New York and downtown Manhattan presented us with the extremes of existence from rural solitude to some of the busiest and most developed urban environments on our planet and those contrasts and the thoughts they provoked very much filtered into the choice of images that comprise the film”.

The song itself features The Joy Formidable’s patented style of hushed melodies which then rise to a crescendo and erupt with a larger-than-life sound. Check out the video below. If you dig the song as much as I do you can download it for free at The Joy Formidable’s official site here.
